Complete Guide To Marimo Mossball Care

In Aquascapes, Freshwater Aquarium Plants, Freshwater Aquariums, Terrarium by

In this guide, we will talk about everything you will need to know about caring for your marimo mossball plants, and extra goodies you will want to know.

What Are Marimo Mossballs

Marimo Mossballs are velvet-like and green colored moss in the shape of balls. Marimo Mossballs can be found in cold fresh water in the wild in ponds, lakes, and rivers.

Marimo Mossballs are very common in the aquarium hobby and aquascape hobby but not as common in the terrarium hobby.

Marimo Mossballs are generally very small but grow rather big over time. The amazingly cool thing about them alone is their massive longevity which we will talk about later in this article.

Marimo Mossballs are perfect for cover, scenery, filtration, and a way to collect food. The Marimo Mossball is HIGHLY favorited by the shrimp due to the moss balls ability to sponge up food, debris, and provide cover to the shrimp. Fish also highly benefit from the Marimo Mossball as well with cover, food, and a place to lay down as well.

Marimo Mossball Habitat

Marimo Mossballs originated in Japan and Austria but have found their way in some lakes, ponds, and streams. Marimo Mossballs were first discovered in 1823. Marimo Mossballs is a local community favorite in Japan and a common aquatic plant in aquascapes and aquariums.

Marimo Mossballs enjoy a cold climate but not so cold that they freeze.

Marimo Mossball Care

Marimo Mossballs Care is very easy. The Marimo Mossballs do not require trimming unless you want to propagate. Marimo Mossball is a very versatile plant that will do amazing in low to medium light with the water being under 70 degrees.

Marimo Mossballs is a hardy plant that can withstand quite a bit but as long as their needs are met they will survive. The aquatic plant is a favorite among aquarium enthusiasts and aquascape enthusiasts alike.

The Marimo Mossball is considered to be one of the easiest if not the easiest aquatic plant to keep in the aquarium hobby. Having longevity and the ability to make a moss carpet out of them, moss walls and trees is just crazy.

What Do Marimo Mossballs Need

Marimo Mossballs need to be kept in colder temperatures for optimal growth. We tend to forget this when they are in with our warm-water fish, like our betta fish, and neon tetras. However, the Marimo Mossballs can survive at warmer temperatures so this is okay.

Marimo Mossballs sometimes need to be recharged. How do you recharge a Marimo Mossball well not with electricity?! All jokes aside DO NOT DO THAT SERIOUSLY.

Marimo Mossballs will be “recharged” by cleaning them with some detergent and putting them in dechlorinated water. Then, place your Marimo Mossballs in your refrigerator to give them the feeling like they are in a much better environment. This can restore their colorations into a more vibrant green color. I would recharge them for a good day.

Marimo Mossballs need to have the air let out of them to help keep them from floating and be sure to squeeze the Marimo Mossballs gently to clear them from debris.

Marimo Mossballs are known to keep a good variety of debris and food inside them which is pretty typical for sponges. Marimo Mossballs are perfect little filters for phosphorus, and ammonia in your tank as well.

When you squeeze your Marimo Mossballs It is recommended to do that during water changes to help clean up the murkiness in your aquarium or aquascape.

How To Clean Marimo Mossballs

Knowing that Marimo Mossballs is a cluster ball of algae, that collects massive debris. That means that they will need to be squeezed to release the debris. It is recommended to squeeze them every month or so very gently so you do not damage them.

The Marimo Mossballs will need to have a good bath to help make sure it’s nice and clean. Cleaning them will remove brown spots and white spots.

You do not need to water condition your Marimo Mossballs but if you would like to help keep their lush green appearance it wouldn’t hurt the Marimo Mossballs.

How Does Marimo Mossballs Propegate

Marimo Mossballs are very easy to propagate aquatic plants. Simply drain all the water from the Marimo Mossballs. Once you have removed the water cut the Marimo Mossballs in half. The final step is to tie the Marimo Mossballs with string or fishing line and place them back in your container.

You will have some more Marimo Mossballs. The Moss Balls do take some time to grow so do not expect them to grow overnight. It is speculated that the moss balls can grow up to 12 inches in the wild but, it happens over many many years!

How Tall Do Marimo Mossballs Get

Marimo Mossballs can get up to 12 inches tall which is pretty big for an aquarium but the good thing is that it takes them an extremely long time to grow to their maximum size.

Why Is My Marimo Mossball Turning Grey

Marimo Mossballs turn grey indicating that they need to be cleaned or that they have too much sunlight.

The colors have a variety of different reasons. Generally, if you have a cool tank, good nutrients, and clean the moss ball regularly you will have few problems. Especially since the longevity of these little guys is absolutely massive.

How Long Do Marimo Mossballs Live

Marimo Mossballs can live to be 200 years old!!! It is absolutely mind-boggling, right? The Marimo Mossballs are considered good luck in the Japanese culture due to their prolonged longevity.

Marimo Mossballs in an aquarium or an aquascape can reach these long life spans with the proper care. Marimo Mossballs aren’t the hardiest plants but what they make up with that is their beautiful lush green color, texture, and their longevity.
