Types Of Invasive Plants In Aquariums

Anacharis

Anacharis is also known as Elodea. Anacharis is an aquatic plant that is also known as waterweeds because of how often they are found in nature and due to how fast it spreads. Anacharis is very common in America and often used in aquarium hobby and laboratories for different research projects.

The Anacharis is a very beautiful aquarium hobby favorite. It’s too bad these Anacharis are destroying so many ecosystems in nature. Its beautiful white flower gives off the impression that they are peaceful and not deadly to nature.

Anacharis will grow in nearly every freshwater setting. However, they favor deep water with rich sediment bottoms.

Anacharis play an important role however to many aquatic animals and fish. It provides protection for fish, and amphibians, as well as provide food for turtles, ducks, and beavers. They also add to the beauty of the water.

These are a real danger to many states like New York, Washington, and Alabama so much so that they are illegal to sell.

Frogbit

What contributes to the spread of Frogbit is the very easy-to-care-for part of them. The Frogbit is used in many aquariums and ponds. They are native to South America and have spread all the way to California.

Frogbit is a highly loved in aquascape, and fish-keepers alike.

They can be found in almost any environment and cover a large array of ponds, lakes, and streams alike. They spread by flowering and by growing chutes out the sides of the plant that grow and break off to form new ones.

Frogbit has a rough time keeping its roots and is very easy to pick up. They can be a bit of a nuisance with water changes and cleaning but when managed they can be easily taken care of.

Java Moss

Java Moss is usually called Hypnaceae. The Hypnaceae are well known by the scientific community to be located just about everywhere.

The Java Moss can attach itself to almost anything which is why it is displayed in many aquascapes like the gif above. They are also a HUGE favorite in the aquarium hobby due to how beautiful they look but also to the huge amounts of benefits they provide to the fish, and shrimp in their aquariums.

The Java Moss is native to Asia. They are very adaptable to almost any environment and can be found in almost every freshwater setting.

Java Moss doesn’t need specific water conditions to grow well. They have adapted to be in environments as low as 50 to as high as 90+ degrees Fahrenheit.

Water Hyacinth

The Water Hyacinth is a green plant with green bulbs filled with air. The plant is called Water Hyacinth because of its beautiful bright colored purple, or pink flowers.

The good thing about them in the environment is that they are not that hardy so they will due in the winter.

The Water Hyacinth is problematic, not due to its hardiness but its way of growing really really fat which is why they are the fasted growing plants. They can actually beat algae to getting nutrients.

Water lettuce

Water Lettuce is not native to just one area of the world. The Water lettuce is very buoyant due to the air bubbles they hold in their stems.

Water lettuce is a very aggressive plant because it can block gas exchanges in the wild killing fish, and block out light to kill other plants.

Water lettuce is not one for the aquarium but if you wanted to have a water garden they would be perfect. They can still be used in aquariums but there are many better plants that you can use to replace them.

Here Are Some More Invasive Plant Species

How To Manage Invasive Plants

One of the main drawbacks of the aquarium is the problem with invasive plant species. There are also invasive fish problems that go with it as well.

The problem is that generally some people will put their plants down the drain, flush them, or drop them off at local ponds, lakes, and streams.

When this happens the wildlife in the lakes, ponds, and streams will perish. If you knew that you did this then you would feel absolutely terrible knowing they all died because of you which is just god awful.

To eliminate this issue with aquarium plants and fish we have to do the right thing.

When you have some invasive plants to get rid of then kill the plants, give them away to friends or family, burn them, throw them in the trash or sell them. That’s about all we can do besides reporting the plants of course to local conservative organizations.

If you would like to manage your aquarium then you will just have to clip the excess parts of the plants you do not want in your aquarium and throw them away as easily as that.
